Track Teams Return To Action In Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Truman women took second and the men were fourth at the Dr. Jim Green Invitational Track & Field meet held Saturday at Illinois College. Derek Atwood, Ryan Peterson and three relays on the women's side were first place winners for the Bulldogs.

Atwood and junior Andy Viehmann scored points in the shot put with Atwood going 51-10.00 for the top spot and Viehmann 46-05.50 for fourth. Atwood then set a personal best I the weight throw by finishing sixth with a mark of 50-10.25.

Peterson beat Monmouth's Eric Brown to the tape by four-hundredths of a second to take first in the 400 meter dash. Peterson's time was 50.37 while Brown came across in 50.41 with both running in the same heat.

Matt Schaefer and Mike Dial both ran personal best in the mile run. Schaefer ran 4:29.90, which was good for fifth while Dial clocked in at 4:38.33 and a ninth place showing.
Matthew LaPointe turned in a season best height in the pole vault clearing 13-04.25, good for fourth and Riley Williams posted a 20-11.25 long jump that was a season best.

The women's relays enabled the women to finish in second place as a team, just one point behind Monmouth for the title. The Bulldogs won three of the four events contested, the 4x200 (1:48.26), 4x400 (4:05.58) and the distance medley (12:41.46).

Individually, Lisa Kucharski finished second in the pole vault (10-03.50), Jennifer Zweifel took the silver in both the long and triple jumps and Rachel McCarroll was second in the weight throw (53-01.00).

One of the best races during the meet occurred in the women's mile run. Truman had four runners in the top seven with Karen Grauel and Anne Ratermann in the lead pack. Rachel Bowden of Monmouth won the event at 5:10.34 with Grauel posing a personal best time of 5:10.40 to finish in second and Ratermann crossing in 5:10.78 for third.

The teams will return to action next Saturday at the Fighting Scot Invitational, hosted by Monmouth College (Ill.).
