Women's Soccer Announces 2012 Schedule

2012 Schedule

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Ten home matches highlight the 2012 Truman women's soccer fall schedule, released Tuesday by head coach Mike Cannon.

The Bulldog women's squad, who will be competing in its 29th overall season in 2012 and 20th under Cannon's direction, will play 18 total regular season games, including 12 MIAA contests as part of the newly-realigned Central region for postseason play.

“We are excited to be playing 10 of our 18 games at home and have a balanced schedule that doesn't put us on the road for an extended block of time,” Cannon said.

Truman will open the season with back-to-back home games on Friday, Aug. 31 against Minnesota State and Sunday, Sept. 2 against Winona (Minn.) State. Both programs, along with second-weekend road foes Augustana (S.D.) and Sioux Falls (S.D.) are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), which joins with the MIAA and the Great American Conference (GAC) to comprise the new region.

The Bulldogs then play 12 of their final 14 matches in a single round-robin conference format, hosting Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri, Missouri Southern, Fort Hays and conference-newcomers Lindenwood and Nebraska-Kearney. Truman's MIAA road matches will be at Washburn, Emporia State, Central Missouri, Southwest Baptist and the league's other set of newcomers, Central Oklahoma and Northeastern (Okla.) State. All league matches – with a lone exception to the final weekend – will be played on a Friday/Sunday format.

“Playing predominantly Friday/Sunday in the MIAA will be great because our players will miss less class time.” Cannon said. “The MIAA only continues to get tougher, and our schedule overall will have a new feel by playing three teams we've never faced and four that we haven't faced recently.”

Cannon's squad will host GLVC-foe Quincy (Ill.) as well as Central Missouri in a non-league match to cap the 18-match regular season slate.

The MIAA tournament returns once again in 2012 with a new wrinkle, as the top eight teams will all play on campus sites for first-round action on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The top four teams will then advance to a single site for the semifinals and championship on Friday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 4.

Regional play will take place the following two weekends, with the national semifinals and championship taking place in Augusta, Ga., on Nov. 29 and Dec. 1.

The Bulldogs will be home for both Family (Sept. 14-16) and Homecoming (Oct. 19-21) weekends and will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 21 against Nebraska-Kearney.

The Truman program, coming off an 11-6-2 season in 2011, has reached the NCAA tournament nine times and has captured nine MIAA titles in 13 seasons. The Bulldogs have a winning percentage of .823 all-time in MIAA play and have placed 76 players on NSCAA all-region teams.
