Pair Of Dogs Advance To Round Of 16 At ITA Regional

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Truman sophomore's Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith each advanced to the round of 16 in the men's draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament in Springfield this weekend. Jess Gennuso and Maggie Schutte picked up wins on the women's side of the draw.
 
Ohlhausen won his first round match 7-6, 6-4 over Arin Enge of Nebraska-Kearney then needed three sets to defeat Billy Haugen (Southeastern Oklahoma) 6-0, 6-7, 10-8 before being taken out in the quarterfinal round by top seeded Marko Boskovic of Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) in straight sets.
 
Smith defeated Washburn's Dario Munoz-Poletti in straight sets then downed Teodor Anghel (Ouachita Baptist) 6-4, 6-4 to earn his trip to the quarters. Smith would fall to East Central (Okla.) University's and seventh seeded Max DeJuan by 6-3, 6-3 scores.
 
That duo also had success in doubles winning a marathon in the first round 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 over a pair from Lindenwood (Mo.) before being ousted 6-1, 7-6 in the next round.
 
Adam King and Kirk Schlueter both lost their first round singles and doubles matches.
 
Maggi Schutte was seeded 16th in the women's draw and won her first match 6-4, 6-1 over Nzinga Banks (Washburn). Schutte's tournament came to an end in the next round when she was defeated by Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University's Faiga Schmidt 6-1, 6-4.
 
Jess Gennuso rallied to win her first round match after falling behind by a set. Gennuso trailed 1-6 but won 6-0 and 10-5 over Nebraska-Kearney's Dominique Kropp. However East Central's Marta Valles, seeded 11th won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to end Gennuso's run.
 
Kim Birenbaum and Kati Austin fell in their first round matches while both women's doubles team also did not advance out of the opening round.
 
Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to William Jewell (Mo.) for a dual match starting at 2:00 p.m.
