Softball Bounced from GLVC Tournament

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – A frantic rally by the third-seeded Truman softball team came up just inches short, as the Bulldogs' tying run was put out at the plate in the bottom of the seventh in an 8-7 loss to William Jewell on Saturday in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.

With the Bulldogs (41-11) trailing 8-3 entering the home half of the seventh, the purple and white looked to rally and advance in the consolation bracket. After Danielle Lewellen led off with a base hit, Andrea Klipsch belted an opposite field home run to pull Truman within three.

A bang-bang call at first base went Jewell's way at the end of Kelsey Bollman's at-bat, turning Cate Simon's follow-up home run into just a solo shot that cut the deficit to just 8-6. For the junior, it marked her second blast of the day and third of the weekend, as she opened scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot to straightaway center field.

Liz Leath singled, and Alexis VanNostrand drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Ally McReynolds, who flew out to left field. On an 0-2 pitch, Jessica VanNostrand was hit by a pitch to load the bases for designated player Whitney Richardson.

With a 2-2 count, Richardson singled to left, allowing pinch-runner Corey Niblett to score. A. VanNostrand was waved home but the throw from Jewell left fielder Rachel Potvin beat her by a slim margin, and the applied tag served as the Bulldogs' final out.

Both teams took advantage of a wind that was blowing out to center field, as WJC belted three home runs (two three-run shots), while Truman added three round-trippers of its own. J. VanNostrand added a double, while Bollman swiped a bag and came around to score as an errant throw bounded all the way to the center field fence.

The Bulldogs tagged WJC starter Rachel Hayden for 13 hits and six earned runs; however, Truman starter Kindra Henze took her second loss in as many days by giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs in 6.1 innings. Kelsea Dorsey entered in relief and retired the final two outs of the seventh.

Truman will now await word as to a possible at-large selection to the 2014 NCAA Div. II tournament, which will be announced during a webcast selection show on Monday, May 5, at 9 a.m. (CT) on NCAA.com.
