Baseball Recap: Truman On Wrong End Of Doubleheader Sweep

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The McKendree (Ill.) University Bearcats doused some water on the hot Truman Bulldogs by taking the first two of the four-game conference series on Saturday. The Bearcats rallied to win the opener 11-8 and took the nightcap 3-1.
 
McKendree came into the weekend hitting .228 at the plate but busted out 25 hits, including 17 in the opener to down the 'Dogs. Ten of the 11 Bearcat players on the day had multiple hits while Truman rallied in both games to tie or take the lead only to see McKendree push across runs late.
 
Game 1 Recap: McKendree scored four runs in the top of the ninth to spoil Truman's six-run comeback and ruin the home opener 11-8. Josh Tonozzi pitched four innings of relief work to earn the win while Andrew Range was saddled with the loss in relief.
 
After two scoreless innings, the game got off to an auspicious start for Truman. The Bulldogs nearly turned an inning-ending double play but Kyle Jackson beat it out to keep the inning alive. Adam Kunkel was the next hitter and went deep over the left field fence to put McKendree up 2-0. Two more reached and Connor Davault grounded into was looked like the third out but when Brendan Trimble reached to tag out Pierce Borah going to third but the ball was jarred free loading the bases. Jake Kline took advantage with a grand slam to left to make it 6-0 McKendree.
 
Jarod Hahn cut the lead in half with one swing of the bat. His second home run of the season in the bottom of the third scored T.J. Wood and Wyatt Fones with one out.
 
The Bulldogs crept closer in the fourth as Fones hit a sac fly to center scoring Blake Deaton and Wood singled with two outs scoring Trimble.
 
Hahn tied things up with his second straight jack to right center in the fifth.
 
Tonozzi took over for starter Jacob Renfrow in the sixth and was greeted with a pair of singles. The runners moved up on a sac bunt. Wood singled in Trimble to give Truman the lead. Zak Larkin then grounded to third and the Bearcats came home for the out only the catcher dropped the ball allowing Chris Illiopoulos to touch the plate for the 8-6 advantage.
 
Sam Reuter relieved Mark Roberts in the seventh and promptly recorded a 1-2-3 inning.
 
Brad Groleau started the eighth with a single and came in on a double by Justin Becker to make it 8-7.
 
In the ninth, the first two reached and on the sac bunt attempt by Jackson, the ball was again knocked loose allowing the tying run to score from second. Groleau put McKendree on top for good as he drilled a pitch over the right field fence to give the Bearcats the lead.
 
McKendree had not hit a home run this season until today's opener.
 
Game 2 Recap: Sam Lidisky retired the final eight Bulldogs and McKendree pushed across the go ahead runs in the sixth inning in a 3-1 victory over Truman. Lidisky improved to 2-2 on the season while Cody Gardner fell to 3-1 as both pitchers went the distance.
 
The Bearcats struck in the top of the second as Groleau beat out a potential double play ball that was hit to Dave Gambino at first. Gambino went to second for the force but Groleau got to the bag before the return throw allowing Kline to score.
 
Truman got the run right back. Blake Deaton singled to left and took second on a fielding error by the left fielder. T.J. Wood laid down the perfect two-out bunt single bringing in Deaton from third.
 
The game remained tied at one until the sixth when McKendree's first two reached. Becker got an infield singled scoring Tyson Boehne for the lead. Kyle Rutledge lined into a double play leaving Adam Kunkel at second but Davault got a clutch double to left center for the insurance run.
 
Lidisky fanned four Bulldogs and scattered five hits.
