Baseball Recap: 'Dogs Take Game Two To Even Series

LIBERTY, Mo.  – After seeing a three-run lead evaporate in game one, Truman turned the tables on William Jewell in game two as the two teams split their opening doubleheader on Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
The Bulldogs hit .406 as a team during the twinbill with T.J. Wood and Dave Gambino each collecting five hits on the day. Paul Trenhaile moved to within eight of the Truman career hits record with four on the day and drove in three RBIs.
 
Game 1 Recap: Luke Lucchetti hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to steal game one from the Bulldogs, 4-3. The Cardinals trimmed the Bulldogs lead to 3-2 with a 2-run homer in the eighth and won it on Lucchetti's first of the season with one out in the ninth.
 
The Bulldogs led 3-0 on single runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings and starter Mark Roberts shutout the Cardinals through seven innings.
 
Chris Iliopouloos grounded out to the pitcher in the second to score Dave Gambino.
 
In the fifth, Paul Trenhaile extended his hitting streak to 18 games with an RBI single scoring T.J. Wood. The same two were responsible for the run in the seventh as Wood led off with a single and Trenhaile brought him home with a two-out base hit.
 
In the eighth, Brendan Trimble led off with a triple but was stranded on two strikeouts and a pop out.
 
William Jewell turned that into momentum as Bryan Rezin led off with a single and following a strikeout, Hunter Brown connected on a two-run homer to cut the Bulldogs lead to 3-2.
 
Truman stranded a runner in the ninth and Austin Tinsley relieved Roberts on the hill. Coleman Waheed led off with a single then advanced on a sac bunt. Lucchetti ended the game with the home run to give the Cardinals their sixth win of the season by one run.
 
Game 2 Recap: The Bulldogs turned the tables on William Jewell to gain the day one split 6-5 in the nightcap.
 
The Cardinals scored single runs in the first three innings to lead 3-0 but Truman got a pair back in the fourth on Dave Gambino's RBI triple and Blake Deaton's single.
 
In the fifth, T.J. Wood doubled in Wyatt Fones for the tie and Trenhaile reached on an error scoring Wood for the lead. Back-to-back doubles by Gambino and Deaton gave Truman a 6-3 lead.
 
Cody Gardner got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth with a called strike three on Bryan Rezin.
 
Gardner hit the first batter in the seventh then an error compounded problems for the Bulldogs bringing the tying run to the plate. Matej Sucha grounded out to short scoring one run and Waheed singled to make it 6-5 bringing the potential winning run to the plate.
Gardner got Dane Erbst to ground into a fielder's choice to earn his fourth win of the season and fourth complete game of the year.  
 
Gambino went 3-for-4 in game two and Trenhaile and Deaton each added two more hits on the day.
