KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The Truman Bulldogs and Missouri S&T Miners endured nearly four hours of rain delays but in the end, Truman escaped with an 8-7 victory to take the GLVC series opener on Saturday. The teams will resume the series with a doubleheader on Sunday with a tentative start time of noon.

The teams sat through an hour and 25 minute delay at the start due to lighting and showers in the Kirksville area. Truman came out swinging in the first as they scored six times to take the early lead. Dave Gambino singled down the right field line to score Jarod Hahn then Brendan Trimble singled to score Paul Trenhaile.

Trevor Bell walked to load the bases and Kyle Smith took a ball off the uniform for an RBI hit by pitch. Wyatt Fones got the big hit of the inning with a bases clearing double to left field.

S&T struck right back with three of their own in the top of the second on four hits off starter Mark Roberts.

Truman loaded the bases in the bottom of their half of the second but could only get one more run as Kyle Smith singled but the next two were retired leaving them loaded.

After the first two reached on walks to start the fifth, a pair of groundouts made the score 7-4 then Lucas Swindle tripled to deep center scoring Nick Ulrich.

Matt Tometz relieved Roberts following a pair of singles to load the bases then promptly walked the first batter he faced to cut the lead to tie the game at seven. Jarod Hahn caught a liner to right to end the inning.

T.J. Wood walked with one out in the bottom of the fifth then got to third following an errant pickoff attempt by the Miners' catcher. The ball sailed into right field allowing Wood to circle over to third base. He would come in on a double by Zak Larkin down the left field line.

With one strike to the leadoff hitter in the seventh, lightning was again detected in the area and the ensuing downpour caused another two hour and 23 minute delay.

When the teams resumed, Tometz went back to the hill and got a 1-2-3 seventh.

A double played ended a Truman rally in their half of the seventh but the Bulldogs turned the tables on the Miners in the eighth. Lance Portwood doubled with one out and Reed Brown got a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Ulrich grounded to Larkin at second, who started the 4-6-3 double play to keep Truman on top.

Peter Young came in for the ninth, gave up a leadoff single and a sac bunt to put the tying run at second but then got Swindle to strike out for the second out. Tyler Bodenstab, who had three hits in the game, lined a shot back to Young, who caught the ball to end the game.

Tometz got the win to improve to 2-0 while Young earned his fourth save of the season.
