Softball Goes 1-1 on Day One at GLVC Tournament

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - - The Truman softball team will have to fight its way back through the loser's bracket on Saturday at the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Championship, as the fourth-seeded Bulldogs opened with a win against No. 5 Bellarmine before falling to top-seed Missouri-St. Louis in the winner's bracket semifinals.

The Bulldogs (33-13) defeated BU 3-1 in the opener on Friday, before dropping the mid-afternoon tilt with the nation's No. 2 Triton squad, 6-4. Truman will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday against another nationally-ranked squad - No. 10 (GLVC No. 2) Indianapolis - at 11 a.m. with the winner advancing to another elimination game at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs and Greyhounds split a doubleheader in Kirksville last Sunday, with UIndy winning game one 8-0 before Truman blanked the 'Hounds 1-0 in the nightcap.

Bellarmine Recap:
A three-run third inning coupled with a stellar pitching performance by junior Kelsea Dorsey sent the Truman softball team into the winner's bracket semifinals of the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament on Friday, as the 4th-seeded Bulldogs downed 5th-seeded Bellarmine 3-1 in opening round action.

After a pair of scoreless innings to get the game going, Truman put up a three-spot in the third behind clutch hitting from the top-half of the lineup. With one out, freshman shortstop Jamie Fowle singled through the left side and advanced to third one batter later when senior second baseman Andrea Klipsch singled to left and advanced to second on a fielding error. Sophomore catcher Lex Van Nostrand then delivered a rocket shot off the glove of BU shortstop Erica Knollman that glanced into the outfield to plate Fowle. Senior first baseman Liz Leath then delivered a double into the left field corner that scored both Klipsch and Van Nostrand and pushed Truman's lead to 3-0.

Dorsey kept the Knights (32-15) off-balance all morning, giving up only a two-out, solo home run in the top of the sixth to BU's Ally Foster, as the junior improved to 17-4 on the year with a complete game, seven strikeout performance. She scattered four hits throughout her effort and walked just one.

Missouri-St. Louis Recap:
The Bulldogs battled stride for stride with one of the nation's elite teams in game two action on Friday; however, the UMSL Tritons maintained just enough of a cushion to hold on for a 6-4 win against Truman in one of two winner's bracket semifinals.

UMSL - who entered the game as a team with 98 home runs on the season - sent GLVC Pitcher of the Year Hannah Perryman to the circle against the 'Dogs, who countered with junior Kindra Henze in search of her 17th win of the year. After sitting down the Tritons in order in the top of the first, senior Andrea Klipsch greeted Perryman with a one-out solo shot to put the 'Dogs on top, 1-0.

The Tritons broke through with two runs in the third and added three more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead, before senior Liz Leath belted a two-run shot of her own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3. UMSL would hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh for a touch of insurance, before freshman pinch-hitter Ashley Murphy belted her first collegiate home run out to center field to lead off the home half of the seventh. However, a strikeout and two groundouts followed, as UMSL held on to improve to 42-6 on the year.

Three of Truman's four hits (Klipsch, Leath, Murphy) left the yard, with senior Allly McReynolds adding the team's other hit in the game. Henze took the loss after pitching four-plus innings of three hit ball, allowing four earned runs while striking out two. Junior Kelsea Dorsey entered in relief and struck out six in her three innings of work, as she gave up five hits and allowed two runs.
