WESTFIELD, Ind.  – Cody Gardner tossed a complete-game and in the process etched his name to the Truman record book as the Truman Baseball team advanced in the winner's bracket of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 7-2 win over #5 Southern Indiana on Thursday.

Gardner gave up a leadoff single but then set the tone by picking off Hamilton Carr for the first out of the game. He would allow 10 hits and struck out five to win his eighth game of the season and 14th for his career. The eight season wins matches Kent Frantz for the team lead and also ties Jeff Birdsong's 1999 single-season record. The 14 career wins breaks a tie Gardner had with Matt Leara (1991-94) for the top spot.

While Gardner was getting it done on the mound, Dave Gambino was leading the Truman offensive charge. Gambino went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the third and an RBI single in the fourth.

The Bulldogs struck big in the bottom of the second. Brendan Trimble and Michael Venturella both singled to start the frame. Jarod Hahn laid down a bunt that not only moved the runners up but led to a wild throw by the pitcher bringing Trimble in to score.

T.J. Wood delivered a blow by tripling to right field to plate Hahn and Venturella for the 3-0 lead. Zak Larkin grounded out scoring Wood.

Paul Trenhaile started the third with a single and Gambino touched them all with his fifth home run of the season to make it 6-0 Bulldogs.

USI's first two reached in the fourth but mustered only a single run on an RBI groundout by Drake McNamara.

Truman got the run back on Gambino's RBI single to score Larkin in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Bertram led off the fifth with a solo home run to center to cut the lead to 7-2.

Gardner then cruised in the final four innings to pitch his first nine-inning complete game. He had gone nine innings earlier this season in an extra inning victory over Drury. He gave up a pair of hits in the sixth, had a 1-2-3 seventh, and threw four pitches, allowing one hit in the eighth before working around a one-out hit in the ninth.

Truman improves to 31-18 on the season and will face the winner of the Missouri S&T/Quincy game on Friday at 1 p.m.
