Bellarmine Defeats Truman Women 92-74

LOUISVILLE – The Bellarmine Knights remained perfect on the season as the defeated the Truman Women's Basketball team 92-74 on Thursday night at Knights Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.
 
The Knights improve to 11-0, 5-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Bulldogs fall to 10-6, 4-2 in the GLVC.
 
How It Happened:
  • The league's top scoring offense (77.0 ppg) scored the first five points and led wire-to-wire against the GLVC's top scoring defense (51.5 ppg).
  • A 5-0 spurt by the Knights gave them an 11-point lead with 2:47 left in the second quarter but the Bulldogs finished the half on a 10-0 run with Courtney Strait's first hoop with one second left cut the lead to one at 42-41.
  • The Knights scored the first seven out of the locker room but a 9-2 run by Truman with four by Strait and five by Ashley Hartwig got it back to one at 51-50 with 5:38 left in the third quarter.
  • Destony Curry hit a triple at the end of the third quarter to push the lead back out to eight at 64-56.
  • Truman clawed back to a half dozen at 70-64 with an 8-2 run but a conventional three-point play by Mackenzie Martinez and a nature triple by Martinez put the game out of reach with 4:21 left.
  • The Knights hit five of six three-point attempts in the fourth quarter (83%) and 11-of-14 overall in the final 10 minutes.
 
Key Stats:
  • Five Bulldogs scored in double figures led by Ashley Hartwig and Rachel Steinhoff's 15 points apiece. Kasey Gassensmith added 13; Courtney Strait 12 and Michalina Tomczak had 11.
  • Sarah Galvin paced the Knights with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added eight rebounds. Mackenzie Martinez scored 14 points, Raven Merriweather had 13 and Beth Bowers chipped in 12.
  • The Knights won the glass 39-30, only the third game this year Truman was outrebounded and the minus nine was the biggest deficit this year.
  • The Truman bench was outscored 28-8 by the Knights.
  • Tomczak was 5-of-9 from the floor with eight rebounds but was limited to 18 minutes due to foul problems.
  • Gassensmith knocked down three of four three-point attempts and Ashley Hartwig connected for her first two triples of the season as Truman hit 7-of-14 outside shots.
 
Game Notes:
 
  • Michalina Tomczak had three of the team's eight blocked shots on the night and in the process moved into Truman's single season top 10 in that category with 36.
  • The 92 points scored by the Knights were the most allowed by the Bulldogs this season and the 166 combine points are tops this year by 28 points (138 vs. Grand Valley State).
  • The Knights' 50 points in the second half were just one point shy of what Truman had allowed per game this season (51.5). The Bulldogs scoring defense averaged went up to 54.0 following the game.
  • Bellarmine's 11 three-pointers made (11-of-18 – 61%) was only the second time in five years that Truman had given up over 10 treys in a game. The last time was 2014 when Maryville hit 18 triples in Pershing Arena.
  • Bellarmine improves to 3-1 all-time against the Bulldogs with all three wins at home in Knights Hall.

The road trip continues on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs head to Evansville, Indiana and the University of Southern Indiana. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
