KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The Truman Baseball scored all three of their runs with two outs then survived a ninth inning scare to defeat Maryville (Mo.) 3-2 in the opener of the four-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Bulldogs scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings all with two outs. In the third, T.J. Wood got Truman's first hit of the game then stole second and advanced to third on a balk. Michael Venturella doubled to left center for the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth following a double play, three consecutive singles by Kyle Smith, Jarod Hahn and Wyatt Fones made it 2-0 Bulldogs. In the fifth, Zak Larkin led off with a double and got to third on a foul out down the right field line. Venturella tried stealing second and as the tag was place upon him, Larkin dashed in from third for the run.

Mark Roberts navigated his way through eight innings without allowing a run. The Saints put runners on in every inning but the sixth when Larkin made defensive gems. He starting the inning by diving to his right and throwing out Brad Ridings then caught a liner off the bat of Mike Wilkinson.

It was Roberts' second straight outing in which he did not allow a run to cross the plate as he fanned three in the process and moved to 4-1 on the season.

The ninth turned into an adventure. Matt Tometz gave up a leadoff hit, which was his only batter faced. Peter Young entered and allowed a pair of singles to make it 3-1. An error on a sac bunt loaded the bases and a sac fly to left by pinch hitter Garrett Jones pulled the Saints to within one. Young got Kaleb Depew to line out to right and Zack Ruckman to pop to center to notch his fifth save of the season.

That save by Young matched Dan Hillen (2005) and Doug Pisarek (1986) for most by a Bulldog hurler in a single season.
