Friday's Recap

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The Maryville Saints took both ends of a doubleheader over the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday by scores of 9-5 and 2-0. The two teams will wrap up the 2015 regular season on Sunday with a single game. The Bulldogs are still looking to nail down their spot in the GLVC Postseason Tournament.

The marathon doubleheader had the first game halted by rain in the Kirksville area in the top of the sixth then the two teams waited out a two-plus hour delay. After the conclusion of game one, the Bulldogs sped up field prep and the teams were able to just get game two in before dusk.

Brad Ridings and Mike Wilkinson were the offensive stars for Maryville. Ridings went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and Wilkinson had three hits in seven at bats with three RBIs, a home run and two runs scored.

Maryville hit .345 against the Truman wins leaders in Cody Gardner and Kent Frantz. Truman mustered a .273 batting average with Zak Larkin going 3-of-6 with a double.

Game 1 Recap: A strong start by the Bulldogs turned sour as Maryville scored nine runs through the middle innings to down Truman 9-5.

Zak Larkin started things off with a hit by pitch and went to third following a misplay on Michael Venturella's base hit to left. Both runners moved up and Larkin scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

However, with Venturella on third and no outs, the Bulldogs failed to get the run in.

Same problems surfaced in the second. Kyle Smith led off with a single and Jarod Hahn drew a four-pitch walk. Smith forced a wild pitch off throw into centerfield then while going to third, the centerfielder air mailed the ball into the Maryville dugout to allow Smith to score and Hahn to move up to third. Joey Gardner his a sac fly to make it 3-0.

T.J. Wood was struck by a pitch and Larkin doubled down the left field line to put runners back in scoring position with one out, however Venturella fanned swinging and Paul Trenhaile grounded out to first.

The Saints rode that momentum and mounted their attack in the third. Garrett Taylor reached on a throwing error and scored on a two-out wild pitch. Mike Wilkinson got an RBI single to right to pull Maryville to within one at 3-2.

Maryville loaded the bases to start the fourth and scored a pair of runs to take the lead. A sac fly from Tyler Catlett tied things up at three then Kaleb Depew took the first pitch he saw to center field scoring Evan Reister for the 4-3 lead.

Wilkinson led off the fifth with a solo home run to left to extend the lead to 5-3.

Weather and field conditions deteriorated in the sixth. Nate Lukas relieved Cody Gardner and retired the first batter on line out to left. Then a single, walk, wild pitch followed by two more walks loaded the bases and brought out the tarp.

Two hours and 27 minutes later, Austin Tinsley took to the hill and threw a wild pitch on his first delievery scoring Depew. Yoojae Nam then doubled to left scoring two more runs for the 9-3 lead.

The Bulldogs tried to fight back. Joey Gardner scored on a wild pitch and T.J. Wood crossed the plate on a ground out by Venturella.

Truman brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh when they loaded the bases, unfortuantly Gardner popped into a game-ending double play.

Cody Gardner took the loss to fall to 7-5 while Justin Laffleur got his first win in five decisions.

Game 2 Recap: Robbie Gordon out dueled Kent Frantz and ended the Bulldog freshman's string of eight straight victories as Maryville took the nightcap 2-0.

Frantz pitched out of trouble in the first three innings but a two-out single by Garrett Taylor in the fourth scored Troy Payton for the 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, Maryville stole their second run. With Kaleb Depew and Brad Ridings on the corners, Ridings broke for second and drew a throw; Depew took off for the plate and got in safely for the 2-0 lead.

That was all Gordon would need as he silenced the Truman bats. He retired the first eight before T.J. Wood doubled in the third. Wood went to third on a passed ball but was left their when Zak Larkin's liner was snared out of the air by second baseman Zack Ruckman.

Jarod Hahn doubled in the fifth with two outs and Wyatt Fones singled to left center. Hahn had trouble with footing rounding third and had to hold up. Wood then looked at a called third strike leading two runners on.

Paul Trenhaile singled with two outs in the sixth but Ruckman made another defensive gem robbing Dave Gambino of a hit.

Truman had runners at first and third in the seventh but Wood was caught looking again to end the game.

Gordon allowed five hits while striking out nine and walking one to earn his third win of the season. Frantz also went the distance but surrendered eight hits with both runs earned for his first collegiate loss.
