Donald "Red" Sylvara

Red Sylvara was reared in Kirksville, where he was an outstanding athlete in high school. He first attended University of Missouri-Columbia but then transferred to the university where he lettered three times in basketball, four times in track and twice in football. Mr. Sylvara was the recipient of the Stickler Cup as a senior in 1955. He received a B.S.E. degree in 1955. His first job after graduation was at Bloomfield (Iowa) High School where he coached basketball and football and started the golf program. After four years at Bloomfield, he moved to Monroe City, Mo., where he stayed seven years. He inaugurated the football program there and also coached track and basketball. His next stop was at Centerville Iowa Junior College where he coached basketball, served as athletic director and was in charge of student activities. Starting in 1966 he spent the next 18 years at Centerville Junior High School.
