Bob Lewis played high school basketball at Wood River, Ill. with two Bulldog Hall of Fame recipients, Ralph Pink and Earl Dodd. One of the Roxana teams chalked up a record breaking 32-3 mark. Mr. Lewis competed in basketball at Shurtleff College and spent three years in the Navy, playing basketball at Purdue University. In 1946 he enrolled at the university joining his old high school teammates, Pink and Dodd. Mr. Lewis earned first team All-Conference recognition twice. Many basketball followers think he was the best one-handed set-shooter from 28 feet out court that has played for the Bulldogs since World War II. He helped the team advance to the NAIA tournament twice and compiled a cumulative record of 59-4. After graduation in 1949, Mr. Lewis taught and coached at Shawneetown and Anna-Jonesboro, Ill. for several years before moving to East Moline, Ill. where he spent 26 years. He taught math at East Moline and became head of the math department until his retirement in 1983. He and his wife have spent their winters in the Brownsville, Texas area.
