Ted Michael graduated from Milan High School and enrolled at the university in 1960. He played both ways for the Bulldog football team and was also a kick returner. Mr. Michael captured All-MIAA recognition twice. He led the 1961 conference champions and Mineral Water Bowl winners in rushing, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. He also ran back 10 punts for 107 yards that year. After his graduation, he was an assistant coach for football, basketball and track one year at Pleasant Hill. He then worked for Ford Motor Company in Claycomo until 1969 when he decided to get back into coaching. He took the head football and track jobs at North Shelby High School and was assistant coach for basketball. He also served three years as athletic director. Mr. Michael's 1973 team won the 1-A state championship, and his teams had compiled a 26-game winning streak when he left North Shelby six years later. During the next decade, Mr. Michael coached at Centralia, Salisbury, Brookfield and West Plains. His Salisbury and West Plains teams each earned trips to the state high school playoff twice. During the time he lived in Salisbury, he quit coaching to work in the electrical business for two years. But then, he returned to coaching again, moving to Brookfield. In 1986 he returned to North Shelby, going full circle. During his long career, Mr. Michael has been named District Coach of the Year three times and selected Tri-Rivers Conference Coach of the Year once.
